COURSE LISTINGS
NEW VISIONS: HEALTH CAREER
EXPLORATION
1 year/4 credits/Grade 12
If you’re intrigued by the
fast-paced world of
medicine, check out the New
Visions Health Careers
Exploration program.
Students in this challenging
one-year program use area
hospitals as their classroom
and work side-by-side with
health care professionals to
learn the various aspects of
the health care field
firsthand.
Students spend a portion of
each day in their own high
school, and three and-
a-half hours on-site at
Ellis Hospital in
Schenectady or St. Peter’s
Hospital in Albany.
Throughout the academic
year, students rotate
through 40 departments in
the hospital to experience
the full spectrum of health
care operations, ranging
from high-tech
bioengineering and nuclear
medicine to the fundamentals
of the business office and
hospital administration.
This type of experience
assists students who have an
interest in the field in
choosing an area of study
for college that is based on
firsthand experience.

NEW VISIONS: PUBLIC
COMMUNICATIONS PROGRAM
1 year/4 credits/Grade 12
In the age of satellites,
interactive television and
the Internet, the
information superhighway is
moving communications
technology along at top
speed. If you’re a high
school senior and have an
interest in getting on
board, you’ll want to enroll
in the New Visions Public
Communications program. This
one-year program is based at
the Times Union and
introduces students to the
many aspects of the
communications field from
journalism and publishing to
telecommunications and
satellite news gathering.
Students work side-by-side
with professionals to learn
firsthand the many aspects
of this fast-paced career
field. What better way to
polish writing skills than
by editing wire service
reports or learning about
the Constitution by studying
first amendment cases? With
this type of firsthand
experience, students learn
to relate their academic and
professional communications
skills and apply these
relationships to diverse
situations.
Students also may earn six
college credits through the
University at Albany (Eng
226L) and Hudson Valley
Community College (Eng
1130).

NEW VISIONS: LAW AND
GOVERNMENT
1 year/4 credits/Grade 12
This program offers
interested high school
seniors an opportunity to
explore some of the
specialization of law and
government in a “real life”
setting at the State
Capitol. This unique course
of study integrates
academics and on-site career
exploration and involves
students in rotations
through various job settings
to observe professionals at
work. Students will gain
insights into the
governmental and legal
process, including
specialized areas of law
such as criminal
prosecution, environmental
protection and consumer
fraud. This experience will
help them in developing a
network of professional
contacts. Students also may
earn four credits in
criminal justice through the
University at Albany.

NEW VISIONS: BUSINESS AND
FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT
1 year/4 credits/Grade 12
This program offers high
school seniors an
opportunity to explore some
of the specialized fields in
business and finance in a
“real life” setting in
Albany’s financial district.
The program integrates both
academic courses and on-site
career exploration, and
stresses communication
skills, analytical thinking
and appropriate professional
interaction. Students will
rotate through various
departments in order to
explore different career
opportunities and to gain a
better understanding of the
world of finance.

NEW VISIONS: HUMAN SERVICES
& SPECIAL EDUCATION
1 year/4 credits/Grade 12
Are you someone who reaches
out to others? This program
offers high school seniors
the opportunity to explore
careers such as social work,
psychology and special
education through clinical
rotations and observation of
professionals in the field.
This new program is located
at St. Catherine’s Center
for Children in Albany,
which employs a wide range
of personnel, including
special educators, speech
therapists, occupational and
physical therapists,
psychologists, social
workers, psychiatrists and
recreational therapists.
Students will spend time
with these professionals in
classrooms for children with
a variety of special
education needs. They’ll
also learn at other
appropriate settings,
including preschools for
special needs children and
agencies that work with
adults and children with
developmental disabilities,
physical impairments and
emotional disturbances.
The integrated curriculum
includes study of the child
welfare system, culture of
the deaf, juvenile justice
and implications of the
Americans with Disabilities
Act. Students also may earn
a total of seven credits
through Hudson Valley
Community College, for the
Introduction to Human
Services Skills and
Perspectives on Disability
coursework.
