The Inductees
Rhonda Phillips Scott
held seven Section II track records (five outdoors and two
indoors) when she graduated from Mont Pleasant in 1984. She
still holds the 600 meter indoor record and ranks in the top
five in six different events. She was the New York State indoor
600 meter champion in 1983 and 1984. She was also the New York
State indoor 55 meter hurdle champion in 1984. Later that year
she was the New York State outdoor 400 meter hurdles champion.
She ran track at LSU where she won the Southeastern Conference
indoor pentathlon (1988) and outdoor heptathlon (1988). She
finished sixth in the heptathlon at the 1988 NCAA Division I
Women’s Track and Field Championship Meet, helping LSU capture
the national title. She was a member of LSU teams that won four
SEC Championships (two indoor and two outdoor) and three NCAA
Division I Championships (one indoor and two outdoor). She was
an All-American in 1988 and 1989. She also qualified for the
1988 Olympic trials in Indianapolis in the 400 meter hurdles.
Armand Farina led Nott Terrace
to consecutive undefeated golf seasons and District
championships in 1935 and 1936. He was the medalist at the 1935
District championship. After high school he turned pro and
played on the PGA Tour, often competing against golfing greats
Sam Snead, Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson. He set a nine-hole PGA
record of 28 at the 1950 Rio Grande Open. He played in several
major tournaments, including three PGA Championships and one
U.S. Open. He was the golf pro at Schenectady Municipal Golf
Course from 1945 to 1966. He was inducted into the District PGA
Hall of Fame in 1982.
The inaugural
football game between Schenectady’s two public high schools was
played in 1932, when Mont Pleasant defeated Nott Terrace 25-0.
The last game, a 33-0 victory by Linton over Mont Pleasant, was
played in 1985. Most games
in this intense rivalry were played on Election Day, usually in
front of crowds of 5,000 to 10,000. Mont Pleasant won
thirty-three games and Nott Terrace/Linton won eighteen. There
were two ties. Athletic Hall of Fame member, Larry Mulvaney,
coached Mont Pleasant to fourteen victories, the most of any
coach in the series.
