Energy Conservation Program

Over the last four years the district's energy conservation program has saved the district hundreds of thousands of dollars each year on energy costs. It takes each of us following strict, but reasonable guidelines to accomplish this to the benefit of our community.

Each building principal is charged with the responsibility to work with his/her staff to ensure that the basic guidelines are followed by all staff. As Energy Manager, Steve Raucci monitors all eighteen district facilities to ensure the following guidelines are being followed. We are all responsible for holding the line on energy usage to the greatest extent possible.

Below are the general guidelines set fourth for our program:

  • All lights should be turned off when you leave a room regardless of the length of time the room will be unoccupied.

  • Avoiding leaving all the lights on in a room if you can by utilizing natural lighting.

  • All classroom doors should be kept closed if you have air conditioning in your room. This also applies to the heating season.

  • Computers must be shut down at the end of the day.

  • All office machines, i.e. copy machines (unless they go into a sleep mode), laminating equipment, etc. with the exception of fax machines must be turned off at the end of each day.

  • All air conditioners shall be turned off at the end of the day.

  • Personal refrigerators are not allowed in classrooms. (Exceptions for a refrigerator based on health reasons will be at the discretion of the Superintendent or the Energy Manager).

  • Electric coffee pots, toaster ovens, or microwaves are not allowed in classrooms. If a coffee pot is authorized, it is to be turned off after use. Once your coffee is made, and you need to keep your coffee hot, pour it into a carafe. If you leave your coffee pot on all morning or day, you will be asked to remove it.

  • All vending machines with non-perishables will be unplugged during shutdowns, and recesses.

  • All lights will be turned off in a building when students and teachers leave the school. Custodians will use lighting only in the area they are working.

  • All outside lighting will be off during the daylight hours.

  • Gym lights are to be turned off when the gym will be vacant for more than a half hour.

  • No space heaters are to used anywhere in the district.
