Two schools are awarded Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation grants
Award brings 36 instruments to Schenectady students
Thanks
to The Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation, two Schenectady City
School District schools received several musical instruments.
This means more students will be able to take lessons, play and
experience the benefits of instrumental music education.
Mary Lattanzio and Keith Pray, music teachers at Jesse T. Zoller
Elementary School and Oneida Middle School respectively, were
each awarded an array of instruments for their school programs.
The Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation donates new and refurbished
instruments to underserved schools, community programs and
individual students nationwide, in an effort to give youngsters
the many benefits of music education, help them to be better
students and inspire creativity and expression through playing
music.
Zoller Elementary School
received three baritones, three alto saxophones, three bell
kits, two refurbished alto saxophones, six refurbished clarinets
and four refurbished flutes.
Oneida Middle School
received a sousaphone, two baritones, two alto saxophones, three
flutes, five refurbished 4/4 violins and two refurbished flutes.
Lattanzio and Pray each received a grant after submitting
applications for support. The foundation found their programs
to be worthwhile investments that will benefit many students.
“Learning music in school is a way to engage kids and give them
something that makes them better students and better people,”
said Felice Mancini, executive director of The Mr. Holland’s
Opus Foundation. “They deserve every tool available to help
them receive a quality education, and we want to insure that
music is in that toolbox.”
The Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation was founded by Michael Kamen,
who composed the music for the movie and countless others. Over
the last 15 years, more than 13,000 new and refurbished
instructions have been donated to 1,058 school and community
music programs across the country.
