Kindergarteners learn about artist, build stabiles

Students in two kindergarten classes at Fulton Early Childhood Education Center recently learned about Alexander Calder who was an American sculptor and artist who is famous for inventing the mobile.   The students had an opportunity to see Calder's mobiles when the classes took a virtual field trip to the National Gallery of Art.

Following the virtual visit, the students accepted a challenge to make an underwater "stabile," which is a term given to Calder's sculptures that have a base and stand like a sculpture.    The young student artists put their creative juices to work and built stabiles using various materials.  For example, they used lines to add detail to the fish.

In a follow-up lesson, the students created underwater backgrounds by drawing objects and life forms that are found underwater.  They then cut and folded paper to create a tripod on which their stabiles would be placed.
