Love to Read (and critique)
Students
enjoy library project
Twenty-seven
students at Hamilton Elementary School participated in the
"Readers are Thinkers" program. The students selected a
book, critiqued the book and then shared their opinion with
other students.
The students
each selected their "Just Right Book" during library skills
classes or when they visit the media center. Librarian
Suzanne Bernadt and paraprofessional Leila Jones were on hand to
help the students.
After
reading the book, the students wrote a review in which they
critiqued the setting, characters and the plot. All of
their reports were later hung in the library media center where
everyone can enjoy their thoughts and and reading suggestions.
When the
students were asked, "why do you like reading," each had a
different response. Here are some of the remarks of the
students:
Savitri:
"What I like about reading is it gives me imagination."
Ladarr:
"I like to read because they (books) take you to different
places."
Brianna:
"I like reading because it is fun and you can express your
feelings."
Garnett:
"I like reading because it feels like you're in
the book, like in a wonderland."
Angelina:
"I like reading because it makes me laugh when I
read funny books."
Attallah:
"I like to learn new things from books."
Jerel:
"I like books and the first page. Do not leave a cat at
home to cause trouble. (He read, "The Cat Who Climbed a
Tree.")
Madison:
"I learned a little about history in my book."
Carlos:
"I liked connecting my life with the 'Sharks' book."
Principal
Rob Flanders said he was very impressed with the students' work,
especially since they read the books and completed the critiques
on their own personal time.
The students
were awarded bookmarks, pencils and a prize for completing their
goals. Bernadt said the most popular prize was a chess
set. "Many students wanted to learn how to play this
difficult game and were anxious to challenge each other."
"I feel that
this was a very successful program to help students enjoy books
and share their literature opinions with other," she added.
