Schenectady Elementary and Middle School Students On Track; Show Improvement in Math

New York State Education Department Released Math Results Tuesday

Elementary and middle school students in the Schenectady City School District continue to show improvement in mathematics according to results released by the New York State Department of Education on Tuesday, June 12.  According to the data, the number of students meeting the mathematics standards has improved to 49% , a 5% increase, from the previous year.  Students in every grade level showed improvement with the exception of fourth grade which stayed the same.

“We are pleased that we are making progress,” said Superintendent Eric Ely.  “We have high expectations and still have a long way to go,” he added “but we are very happy to see this improvement.”

In addition to seeing overall measurable improvement toward meeting the standards, the data also shows that students scoring at the lowest level – or level 1 - are also showing movement. 5 % fewer students scored in the bottom level.  "This is what we want to see," said Ely.  "The students in the lower levels are moving up to the next level."

The system is based on four levels in which students who score in levels 3 and 4 meet and exceed the standards.  Students who score at level 2 are failing, and those in level 1 are considered to be serious academic problems.

All three of Schenectady’s middle schools, Central Park, Mont Pleasant and Oneida showed vast improvement.  Central Park weighed in heaviest with an increase of 14% from the previous year.

Ely said much emphasis is placed targeting middle school students and getting them to where they need to be.  In September, the district is implementing a number of programs and services including tutoring, remedial assistance, extended day programs and reduced class sizes, all designed to reach and help all middle school students in both mathematics and English Language Arts.

"We're confident we are doing the right things and will continue to get positive results," said Ely.
