SHS Grad,
now freshman at Clarkson, returns to talk to students
Corinne Higgins dreams of being an astronaut,
thanks to NASA Explorer School
Corinne
Higgins, a 2009 graduate of Schenectady High School,
International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma recipient and
alumnus of the
Central Park NASA Explorer School who is now a freshman at
Clarkson University, recently spoke to students in grades 3-6 at
Keane Elementary School.
Higgins, who
dreams of being an astronaut and working for NASA,
approached Danielle
Hartkern,
teacher at Keane who once taught her in the NASA Explorer School
at Central Park. She explained that she is involved in a
NASA-sponsored engineering club called RASC-AL and is in a
competition in which she designs a mission and presents it to
astronauts. Also as part of the competition, the students
have to visit schools and give presentations on what they do and
how students can get involved in other NASA projects.

Hartkern gladly
accepted her invitation.
While at Keane,
Higgins visited seven classrooms.
"She did a beautiful job presenting information about studying
in college and what it takes to perhaps get a job with NASA,"
said Hartkern
Higgins' dream to
be an astronaut started in middle school when she participated
in the NASA club and talked to astronauts on the International
Space Station. She was also inspired when Hartkern took
her to NASA's Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia to
launch a sounding rocket with the club's experiment on it.
