Congratulations
to SCSD Top Spellers
Spelling bee held Friday; 3 advance to
regional competition
Congratulations
to Nathan Persaud, winner of the Schenectady City School
District 2010 Spelling Bee held Friday, January 8 in the Mont
Pleasant Middle School auditorium.
Persaud, a 6th grader at Martin Luther King Math,
Science, Technology and Invention Magnet School, out-spelled 45
students in grades 4-6 who represented all of the schools in the
district.
Emily Armour, 4th grader at Van Corlaer Elementary
School and Salma
Kouchay, 6th grader at Zoller Elementary School
placed second and third respectively. All three of the top
spellers will advance to the regional spelling bee slated for
March 15 at Proctor’s Theatre.
Friday
morning’s bee lasted eight rounds. Six students advanced to
round five and then just four students to round six. Kouchay
was knocked out of the seventh round when she misspelled
“physician.”
Persaud and Armour went head to head spelling word after word
correctly. After correctly spelling four words in the final
round, Armour misspelled “nauseous,” giving Persaud the
opportunity to take over the word and the title. In order to
win, he had to spell “nauseous” correctly and then spell an
additional word. But, he also misspelled "nauseous," giving
Armour another chance.
Armour then misspelled her next word – “façade” - leaving the
door open again for her competition. Persaud didn't miss this
time. He spelled both “façade” and the additional word,
“superstitious” correctly to take the title.
The top three winners were presented with trophies as the early
round competitors watched and cheered from the audience.
All of the spellers in the district showdown placed in the top
three of their school spelling competitions held over the last
month.
The spellers' advice to
others: read! read! read!
Congratulations!
