Three SCSD 5th
Graders Take Top Spots in Spelling Showdown, Advance to
Regional Contest
 Congratulations
to Rojan Karn, a King Magnet School 5th grader who
out-spelled 39 students from across the district to take the top
spot in the Schenectady City School District Spelling Bee held
Tuesday at Mont Pleasant Middle School.
Anna Blanchfield,
a 5th grader from Central Park Magnet School and
Shatisha Povidence, a 5th grader from Franklin D.
Elementary School took second and third place respectively. All
three spellers advance to the regional competition set for
February 7 at Proctors in Schenectady.
Karn and
Blanchfield were locked for the last nine rounds Tuesday. After
Blanchfield misspelled the word “niche,” Karn locked in the win
by spelling that word and the next word which was “simulcast.”
Karn said he is
proud to be the ace speller but is a little nervous about the
upcoming regional competition.
Congratulations to
all of the participants who took the top spots in their
individual school spelling bees before advancing to the
district-wide competition.
