Students in Diane
Allegro’s class at Schenectady High
School learned how to complete and
file their own tax returns in class.
Allegro, a business
education teacher, explained to the
students that if they did not file an
exemption form with their employers,
they can recover money from the
government by filing a tax return.
Students who filed an exemption form
did not have any taxes withheld from
their paycheck.
Allegro
guided the students through the process
of completing their returns. They
learned how to file using Free-File a
program available through the Internal
Revenue Service’s website.
According to Allegro, the students were
happy to learn about their refunds. They
recovered more than $1,500 in federal
and state taxes. Additionally, they
saved between $40 and $70 by preparing
their own taxes and avoiding fees
charged by a tax preparer.
“I hope this is the
last time I have to do this,” said
Infinite Jones, a student who worked
part-time and followed the process to
complete her return.
“This is only the
beginning,” explained Allegro. “You
will be filing taxes every year for the
rest of your life."
