is named Outstanding Adult Student
by NYACCE
Orachorn Thongnak
Meyer, a student at Washington Irving Adult Education Center was
recently named “Outstanding Adult Student for 2011,” by the New
York State Association for Continuing Community Education (NYACCE)
Legislative Awards Event Committee at an awards dinner held at
the Century House. She was selected as one of 20 students
from across the state to receive the honor.
English
as a Second Language (ESL) teacher Yvonne Matthews nominated
Orachorn, who is originally from Thailand, for the honor.
Orachorn is continuing her education and is currently working on
obtaining her GED at Washington Irving. She became a U.S.
citizen in June and voted for the first time in the November
elections.
Orachorn
received a citation from Assemblyman James Tedisco and a
Certificate of Merit from Senator Hugh Farley. She was
invited to the legislative session and received the citation on
the floor while the Assembly was in session. After
Orachorn's "Student of the Year" biography was read aloud, she
received a resounding round of applause.
“We are very proud of what she has achieved in such a short
period of time in the United States,” said Matthews.
Orachorn is the
second student from Washington Irving to be nominated for the
award.
